Fall 2020 Newsletter
Bruce R. McIntyre, Director of Golf
Happy Fall to everyone! Wow, what a crazy season. I hope this update finds everyone safe and healthy during this unprecedented time. I’m happy to report that the Barnstable Golf staff is all doing well. We are grateful to the Town of Barnstable for their support during such a difficult period. Since reopening in early May, we have gone through and adapted to many changes. Virtually everything we do has been affected in some way. The staff, as always, rose to the occasion and the summer of 2020 was the busiest we’ve experienced in many years.
We’ve come a long way from 20 minute tee times, touch-free golf, contactless transactions, masks, and no bunker rakes or ballwashers. Sanitizing golf carts, range balls & buckets, along with continual cleaning and disinfecting of the golf shop and clubhouse facilities has become daily operating procedure. All of the new compliance protocols have proven to be very labor intensive and expensive to adhere to. We hired additional staff at both golf courses in order to ensure we maintained a clean and safe environment for all to enjoy.
I would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding while we worked through the maze of regulations and requirements necessary to keep the facilities open and accessible to pass holders and the general public. We appreciate your cooperation in following the many rules put in place for the staff’s and your safety. It seems most players have become accustomed to the evolving, new normal, for golf.
Not all of the news at Barnstable Golf has been good. We all know of businesses that have failed during the pandemic. Restaurants and bars have been hit the worst. Almost every business has had to make significant changes to survive. We have recently been informed by Dan Keefe and Scott Allen, current providers of food and beverage services at Hyannis GC, that they have been forced to close operations due to the financial effects of Covid 19. Dan, Scott and staff have been partners with us at Hyannis since 2007. They have done an excellent job and will be sorely missed. Please pass on a word of thanks if you see Scott and/or any member of the staff. They will be a tough act to follow.
Suffice it to say, we have had to juggle our priorities too. The following are a few operational changes to take effect immediately, for the short term, until OBF closes for the season. Our conservative approach this fall and winter will allow us to maximize our resources and efforts on the busy spring months of April, May and June.
*Tee times now start at 8:30 am daily (barring any frost delay)
*Golf Shop Hours of Operation: 8:00 am – 3:00 pm daily
*Cart availability: Last 18-hole cart 11:00 am, last 9-hole cart 1:00 pm, NO carts after 1:00 pm.
For the month of November:
*Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds will be closed on Mondays & Tuesdays, commencing 11/9
*Hyannis GC will be closed on Wednesdays & Thursdays, commencing 11/11
*Both courses will be open Friday-Sunday.
*OBF closing day for 2020 is Sunday, 11/22. Hyannis will be open daily, weather pending, after OBF closes.
Thank you for your continued understanding, loyalty and support, be well everyone!
