Bruce R. McIntyre, Director of Golf
So far the winter of 2020 has been relatively mild with very little snowfall. This has resulted in a great opportunity for many of you to play some winter golf and for the staff to accomplish some much needed projects and improvements on the courses.
The Golf Maintenance staff, with tremendous assistance from the Town’s Structures and Grounds (S&G) Division, completed edging and reshaping of all the bunkers at Hyannis and OBF Golf Courses in the month of January! Our combined staffs joined forces with 5-6 S&G employees, including the necessary equipment provided by the DPW, to handle the project. In all, 44 bunkers were edged at Hyannis GC with five (5) being filled in, and 66 bunkers at OBF were edged with one (1) being filled in. Much work, such as grading, grooming and conditioning of the bunkers, still remains and needs to be completed as well as capping and seeding/sodding of those bunkers that were filled in.
Barnstable Golf is entering its second year of transitioning away from traditional turf management practices in favor of an environmentally sustainable approach. Much progress was made last year resulting in significant reductions in chemical and fertilizer use. Golf Management recognizes the difficulty associated with this type of multi-year transition and the fact that we will face some big challenges along the way. Some of the long term benefits to be realized are reduced pesticide exposure to all who enter the properties, enhanced protection of water resources and water quality as well as supporting biodiversity of the soils.
We are asking for your understanding, patience and cooperation while we continue with this important initiative. Everyone can help contribute to our success by practicing proper golf etiquette such as replacing divots, repairing ball marks, picking up litter, raking bunkers, and, most importantly; pay attention to and respect notices regarding maintenance activities, course conditions, and cart directional signs. The entire staff at Barnstable Golf takes enormous pride in what we do. We hope you are proud of your golf courses, too, and that you will do your part to make our facilities the best they can be.
A spring members’ meeting is scheduled for Friday, April 3, 2020. Topics will include the new global handicapping system, upcoming plans and projects, and an overview on the status of Barnstable Golf.
We are planning to bring back the “adopt-a-hole” and divot filling programs this year and we’ll be soliciting interested volunteers who wish to help out.
